Dunfermline Athletic

Wallace's perfect seven

Monday, 16th Dec 2013

"As far as goals I do not have a personal target, the target is promotion for the Club.

Ryan Wallace celebrates

Ryan Wallace scored two but maybe could have scored more as Dunfermline came back from two goals down to win comfortably at Ayr. He talked about the comeback after the match:-

"We knew that there was always going to be chances. Andy Geggan maybe should have put one away but we knew if we upped it in the second half we could win the game. We were 2-0 down after the boy (Brian Gilmour) hit a wonder strike and a mistake by one of the young boys who has learned from it. After it he was absolutely terrific. Overall the boys were brilliant and we took the chances when we got them."

Possibly that's just as well since Ryan revealed that Jim Jefferies had been pretty hard of the players at half time:-

"The Manager didn't really care about the conditions to be honest. Obviously they were tough but at the end of the day, it is a game of football. If Ayr can adapt to it and go 2-0 up then why can't we adapt to it? That's the way we looked at it and the Manager was right to have a go at us at half time, he got a reaction scoring four goals.

"In the first half the wind was blowing down the pitch, that was a wee bit more difficult because the ball was holding up when we were playing the ball in. We just tried to adapt to it but in the second half we just got on with it and had more of the wind behind us. The ball was coming in a bit quicker and we were moving it quicker.

"We play fast flowing football and we like to get on the ball, play and cut teams open. That's how we play and score goals all the time. Maybe other teams would say that they are not good goals to lose but we score good goals in our eyes."

The 23 year old scored two, the first from the penalty spot on the hour and another from open play nine minutes later but he might have had a hattrick had the crossbar not kept him out or been on target with several other attempts including a good headed effort.

The penalty was Ryan's seventh success out of seven from the spot this season and he has eleven goals to his name so far.

"We have had a lot of penalties this season; boys just take you down in that area. As far as goals I do not have a personal target, the target is promotion for the Club. If I can get anywhere near twenty goals this season I would call that a plus given I am playing in a wider position.

"For a club the size of Dunfermline to be in the Second Division - and no disrespect to the Second Division - but they are a big club and should be either First Division or Premier League. People coming to our stadium say that it is massive and we shouldn't be in this league. Promotion is going to be a hard task to try and catch Rangers now since they are miles in front.

"All we can do is try for the play offs now, get in them and take our chances there. In this league everybody can beat everybody else. You could see how against Ayr they were 2-0 up and we were night and day between first and second half. Switch off for two seconds and you are 2-0 down."

A young team may have given up after going 2-0 down but Ryan said that in training John Potter and the coaching staff are always impressing upon the players to react to losing the ball.

"React quickly, get on the ball again, get back in and play. It is a testimony to the coaching staff as well that as a young side we are not scared of anybody and we are not scared of going two goals down. We will go and play and to go a goal down seems to kick us on, that is what has happened previously."
