Todd Up For The Cup

Sunday, 11th Dec 2022

“We are through to the next round and we will see what we can do when we see who we get.

Matty Todd has impressed in every performance this season but after scoring two goals on Friday night he stood out with his energetic contribution against Championship side Arbroath. It was a very happy goalscorer who described his night at Gayfield:-

“I enjoyed it a lot. The service was unbelievable all night - Wighton and Todorov, we have got a good link up and I’m glad that I have chipped away with two goals and two assists as well. It’s another victory and we move on to the league next week again.”

Matty was given the green light to go hattrick hunting and he opted to take a free kick in the second half with that ambition. He explained:-

“The gaffer said that at half time - ‘be greedy’. So I have won the foul and the first thing that I have done is grab the ball and try to score but it didn’t work out. I am just happy to get on the scoresheet.”

Now with 81 senior matches under his belt the 21 year old midfielder has scored nine career goals, six of them in his 24 appearances this season. He has been an ever present in every one of James McPake’s starting elevens and has played the full ninety minutes in all but four of them.

Now to go up against a Championship team on their own turf and win the way they did, hopefully that can provide a welcome boost to the league campaign. Matty believed Arbroath did show their Championship class but felt that it was Dunfermline’s performance that was formidable on the night:-

“It is massive, they were a good side last season and this season they may be struggling but at times they can show why they are in the Championship. They are a dangerous side but I thought first half we were excellent. We moved the ball very well, caused them all sorts of problems and I think we fully deserved our 4-0 lead at half time.”

Apart for scoring two goals for the first time in a match, Matty’s contribution was relentless all game and the result and the performance is something to keep in mind as they try to get back into the Championship.

Remaining more grounded however Matty related to the SPFL Trust Trophy where Dunfermline are delighted to be one of three Fife clubs in the last eight and in with an opportunity to win:-

“It is something that we are hoping to do, add silverware to our season. This is another chance to do it, we are through to the next round and we will see what we can do when we see who we get. We didn’t have a thought of the league tonight. We are through to the next round now and over the weekend we will turn our focus back on to the league business next weekend.”
